URGENT SAFETY NOTICE

Elevators installed with more than 4 inches of “gap space” between the hoistway doors and the elevator car doors can pose a serious safety risk. Children may become entrapped in the space and could be seriously injured or killed. This risk can be reduced with the proper installation of space guards at each floor.

What to Check During an Elevator Inspection

What to Check During an Elevator Inspection

Here’s what to check when getting an elevator inspection done.

If you have a home elevator, you’ll want it to stay in top condition for as long as possible. To help with this, you should get your elevator frequently inspected. Typically, an elevator inspection should happen a minimum of once per year. During these inspections, there is a lot that needs to be checked. Here’s what to check when getting an elevator inspection done.

Inspect the Pit

The pit is at the bottom of your elevator shaft. Oftentimes, this area doesn’t get a lot of attention, which makes it all the more important to look at it during an elevator inspection. During the inspection, your inspector should see if the pit is accessible and if it has sufficient clearance. All the while, water, dirt, and debris will be removed from the pit. After all of this is done, your inspector should identify any damage that the car frame has sustained.

Check the Machine Room

The machine room is a vital component of what allows the elevator to function properly. During an elevator inspection, your inspector will monitor the lubrication and oil levels of your elevator mechanical systems. The electrical wiring will be checked to see if there are any defects that could be dangerous. Finally, any obstacles that could keep the inspector from accessing equipment will be removed.

Checking the Cab

Another part of your elevator inspection includes inspecting the cab, both the interior and exterior. Starting with the interior, your elevator inspector will check to see if the elevator doors close and open as intended. At the same time, the lights, ceiling, handrails, and flooring will all be checked for any signs of damage. The emergency phone will be tested as well.

For the cab’s exterior, some of the same things will be checked, like the doors and lights. On top of this, the fire alarm system will also be inspected so that it’s ready for emergency situations.
