National elevator code limits cab size to 15 square feet, with the average size being three feet wide by four or five feet deep. The size of your hoistway and elevator will depend on the location it is installed in your home. A typical hoistway is about 52 inches deep by 57 to 69 inches wide. Your home should have a pit that is either in the foundation of your home or the basement.
